Autumn has arrived, and that means it’s time for chilly weather, cozy sweaters, and college open house season. There are plenty of reasons why you should go to open houses, many of which you’ve probably heard from teachers and parents alike. From a chance to meet possible professors face-to-face, seeing campus in person, and even possibly getting your application fee waived, there are a whole slew of benefits you get out of attending. But one benefit some people tend to overlook is the free food and goodies.

There are plenty of places in life to find small joys, and for me, one of them is getting free items. Open houses give free items from stickers, pens, shirts, or maybe even a free meal, all for the low price of your time and presence, especially if it’s a local college.

And if you don’t know whether an open house may provide items or not, try checking out their website. Information about what will be covered, how long it’ll go on for, and what you’ll get out of it are usually pretty easy to find, especially since they’re trying to entice students into coming and considering their college as their choice.

But maybe you don’t know of any colleges to try visiting. There’s plenty of resources out there to help with that, from the Career and Development Center at LCCC to even just googling “college open houses near me.” Tons of resources exist to help new, returning, and continuing students alike find what might be their final choice for college.

So go out, explore some colleges, and  enjoy the things you’ll get out of your adventures.
