Fit, fun, and friendly—these are some of the adjectives used to describe LCCC's Intramural Volleyball Recreational League.

This league has become an activity on campus that students look forward to throughout the week. Lacey Timony, one of the league organizers, shared that the main goal is lifelong fitness habits.

Held in the campus gymnasium, the recreational league gives students an opportunity to stay active while building friendships outside of the classroom. Unlike varsity athletics, the intramural format focuses less on intense competition and more on overall fitness, health, and enjoyment. Players range from former high school athletes to students who are trying volleyball for the first time.

“Come here and have fun! Nobody is going to judge you if you make mistakes, and it’s a great way to get to meet new people,” said Marcus Scherier, a player on one of the recreational league teams.

His perspective reflects the relaxed and supportive atmosphere that many participants appreciate.

For some students, the league provides a chance to reconnect with a sport they once loved, while for others it serves as a new beginning.

“I wanted to get back more into volleyball,” said Paul Parksinson, a player on the recreational team.

Timony explained that volleyball is just the beginning. LCCC plans to introduce new intramural events, including a virtual Boston Marathon in April where participants have 20 days to run 26.2 miles. She added that other upcoming activities will include kickball and a pushup contest, ensuring there is something for everyone.

As the volleyball league continues to grow, it is clear that these healthy activities are more than just a break from academics.  They are a foundation for a connected, active campus culture.

Timony said, “Come talk to us anytime. If there’s another recreation sport that anybody wants to see, if we can make it happen, we’ll make it happen.”

With that open invitation, the league serves as a reminder that at LCCC, building community can be just as important as earning a degree.
