While many students at LCCC responded to the loss of competitive school sports with disappointment, Zach Snyder responded with a creative approach – rekindling school spirit with an event that combined golf and community building.

Zach Snyder, manager of wellness and intramurals at LCCC, is a longtime baseball athlete who played the game for more than 10 years. Snyder decided to organize a golf-themed event on campus towards the back of the Berrier hall on Wednesday Sept. 17. The time spent in the soccer field was filled with plenty of putters trying to sink their shot for a chance to win a refreshing Arnold Palmer (a drink made famous by the golfer that’s half iced tea and half lemonade).

Snyder’s biggest reason for hosting this occasion was to shine a light on the fun of competitive school sports.

“If there aren’t school sports, people just come in – do their classes and leave,” Snyder said. He noted that LCCC still has intramural sports available for students to join.

The golf event was designed not only to appeal to athletes, but to anyone on campus looking for a reason to hang around. Students could give a total of 10 attempts at a putt from medium range. If they made the putt, they earned an Arnold Palmer iced tea, which was a fun play on the “tea and tee” pun.

Many of the participants who came for the hangout enjoyed the lighthearted nature of the putting. It should be said that making the putt wasn’t the star of the show. If you came out to try, the iced tea was yours.

By combining sports, community, and some creativity, Snyder was able to launch a successful community gathering. The event gave students a chance to connect, play some golf and have fun.
