In late October 2023, fans of the game series “Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF),” flocked into theaters to watch the new movie of the same name. Five Nights at Freddy’s is infamous for its lore in the video game series that involves murder, children possessing objects, and most notably frightening animatronics.
Online movie critics have been giving the new movie tons of bad reviews, with a 28% critics review on rottentomatos.com. However, the audience rating is currently an 88% rating, which means that the fans have enjoyed the movie significantly more than the critics have.
Critics claim that the movie is centered around the games, and that it will not be enjoyable for people that want to watch the movie for its horror and not for its history. Fans, however, say it captures the lore and source material pretty well.
“I really enjoyed the new ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ movie,” said Azelia Castillo, a Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) student. “It was nice to see a different spin on what the original games and books were based off of and ‘meet’ all the characters again in a way.”
The new “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie takes the basic concept of the story of the games and creates a whole separate world from its video game counterpart. This was a strategic decision made by the game and movie’s creator, Scott Cawthon, as it separated the timeline of the movie from the game in order to tell a brand new story.
