What You Missed at the Swap Shop

On Sept. 10, LCCC’s Career Development Center hosted their inaugural “Swap Shop”, a community driven trading event.
The concept and execution is simple. Students traded in an item or two of their choice and then chose three to six items from the variety of things other people brought.
Items up for grabs included mugs, used clothing, bags, toys, unused school supplies, books, board games, decorations, puzzles, and collectors items. For example, a student came in with a backpack, and traded it for a set of clothing, and a mug.
Both students and administrators participated in the event.
“We wanted to host this event for the students,” said Kescha Bell-Ross, director of career development and civic engagement at LCCC . “We hosted this event because we understand the economic issue in our country, and we wanted to offer this as a solution to that problem. And with everyone interacting with each other in this event, we also help build a community.”
According to the Federal Reserve, America has several major pressure points in the economy that on a daily basis affect people’s costs. Inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s 2% goal even while economic growth and unemployment are considered solid.
This leads back to the benefit of this event: if a student traded two items, for example, they would save a lot of money for three sets of clothing. Students found the concept simple and convenient.
For information on future events, students should check their email and take a look at the Student Events tab on the LCCC portal.
