My school record may not look the best when read backwards, but moving forward, I continue to make progress, especially here at LCCC. This community college has made the journey much easier for me, but even after three semesters and a gap year, I'm unsure about what I want to pursue.

I decided to schedule an academic advising appointment with my advisor, Ilona McGogney. As a liberal arts major, you can imagine how challenging it is to narrow down my career options.

Every time I step into the advising’s welcoming office I am greeted by the warmth and familiarity exuded from the staff. Within McGogney’s office I’m greeted with the vitality reflected in the beautiful painting behind her. I snapped a photo of it while she kindly got me a cup of water during a coughing fit; it perfectly captured her caring nature.

The striking painting was a gift to her, which embodies beauty and strength that must be appreciated in person. I kept the photo as a reminder of the comfort and inspiration she provided me in that moment of uncertainty.

When she returned, I decided to be honest and share my dreams with her. To my surprise, she was excited and encouraged me to move forward with my ideas. Together, we mapped out my schedule for this Fall and Spring so I can graduate and pursue my goal of teaching English in Italy.

So, schedule that advising appointment—you never know what opportunities might open for you!
