During October, hospitals across the Lehigh Valley light up their buildings in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest and St. Luke's University Hospital–Bethlehem Campus show their support with pink decorations and events. In recognition of this devastating, horrible illness, local hospitals shine pink lights to represent hope, strength, and early detection.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lilliana Rodriguez, a nurse at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest says, “Even one person coming in for testing because they saw our lights is a win for us.”

Both hospitals partner with schools and local groups to promote outreach, and the oncology and radiology departments have set up informational tables and support sessions. Additionally, both hospitals are American College of Radiology-accredited centers in their breast health services and have recently announced expansions to meet growing needs.

Local community members have also helped raise awareness to the disease, often partnering with hospitals as well. With many volunteer programs out there to bring awareness, volunteers often hand out pink ribbons and pamphlets about self-exams.

Maria Lopez, a nurse with the hospital’s breast cancer awareness program, emphasized the importance of the community's involvement.

“The love and support the community offers really does make a difference in these patients' recovery,” she said.

The community's participation extends beyond hospital walls, reaching local businesses, social media campaigns, and school events. These hospitals hold fairs, walks, and other pink-themed events to emphasize the importance of early detection and self-exams. Together, hospitals and communities have brightened up not just their lights but their patients as they support and fight for those affected by breast cancer.
