How to Combat Senioritis in the Final Stretch

It’s something we’re all too familiar with - senioritis. It starts small, manageable at first. Thoughts cross your mind of “I can do it later” or “Does this assignment really matter?” But soon enough, it’ll creep up and bite you. Suddenly, you’ve been scrolling through TikTok for hours and have a stack of essays and homework assignments due at 11:59pm.

Senioritis is more than just another pop-culture term made up by lazy teenagers, though. It’s a real concept that high schoolers and college students experience across the globe. It can be hard, even impossible, to feel motivated to succeed with acceptance letters rolling in, or a job lined up. Everything can seem unimportant and you just can’t wait for the year to be done.

However, planning your dorm decorations when you should be focusing in class might not be the best idea. Plans fall through, acceptances and jobs can be revoked if word gets out that your GPA isn’t exactly what it used to be. And while the consequences aren’t always that extreme, you surely don’t want to get into a slacking cycle just before your life in the real world begins.

Now I know how dark and discouraging that sounds, but it can be prevented! Everybody is different, but I’ve found a few tips that are really helping me in this final stretch we call senior-year. First, it is important to set goals for yourself. It’s even helped me to have some type of reward when those goals are reached. Whether that be a trip to the mall, or just a sweet treat after dinner, getting a small prize after you’ve worked so hard to succeed can really help you to remain motivated to keep going.

That being said, discipline yourself. If you decide “I can only go out with my friends tomorrow if I finish this paper tonight”, and that paper doesn’t get done, stay home! Of course, you should be letting yourself have fun and let loose, but keep a healthy balance. Work hard, play hard! It’s cliche, but true.

If those tips aren’t helpful for you, my last recommendation is to just continually remind yourself that the end is near! For a lot of us, graduation is just two months away and it’ll come sooner than you think. Until then, try to lock in to the best of your ability, TikTok will still be there in May.
