Growing Careers on Campus

For Rayniel Espinal, keeping up with classes while working on campus means making the most of his time.
Espinal is a second-year student at Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC). He currently works in the recreation and wellness department, specifically in the fitness center and game room. Espinal first learned about LCCC’s online job management system, the Cougar CLAW, through the Career Development Center when he attended a Lehigh Valley Health Network connections event.
“I wanted a job that offered flexibility around my science courses and class schedule,” said Espinal.
Having a flexible schedule made it possible for Espinal to balance work and school. His science courses require a lot of studying and preparation, so he stays organized and plans his work hours around his classes. This way, he's able to remain on top of his assignments.
For Kescha Bell-Ross, director of career development and civic engagement, Cougar CLAW is about more than providing students with employment. It also helps students develop skills and explore possible career paths.
“Being a student worker helped me build my career when I was young,” she said. “I had the experience of being a student worker, so connecting back to it and knowing how much it helped me makes me love the job because I know firsthand what it can do.”
Student employees work in departments across the college, including technology, science labs, admissions, student life, recreation and wellness, and career development. Their responsibilities vary by department, giving students opportunities to gain both professional and technical skills.
Through his position, Espinal has developed communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills. He has also learned how to stay calm and think through difficult situations while working in a fast-paced environment.
Bell-Ross also encourages students who are unsure about their future to use Cougar CLAW, student employment, internships, and job-shadowing opportunities to explore different careers.
“It’s all about learning and being open and growing,” she said.
Students also receive career-development support through activities such as e-portfolios, which help them build resumes, identify accomplishments, and practice introducing themselves professionally.
For Espinal, it has been a positive experience.
“It is a good opportunity for students to gain work experience while still being able to focus on their education. It also allows you to develop skills, meet people on campus, and become more involved in the college community,” Espinal said.
Working on campus can open a variety of opportunities. It's a way for students to build connections and develop skills while staying focused on their education.
