Do It Afraid

Caroline Sweeney | Writer

I have a confession to make, I am naturally an anxious person in my daily life. It does not take a lot for me to feel anxious. Balancing school, work, and a social life can be very overwhelming. However, none of those things compare to what causes me the most anxiety in my daily life. What causes me to be the most anxious is something we all have to do: drive.

I started driving the way I imagine every new driver starts: excited and hopeful. I waltzed into the DMV ready to get my learner's permit and take on the road.

However, something switched once I had the permit and got behind the wheel. Suddenly, the weight of being in the driver's seat hit me, and a thousand questions flooded my mind. What if something happens to me? What if I accidentally cause an accident and it's all my fault? You get the picture.

Needless to say, I have yet to pursue getting my driver's license. This has been a tremendous roadblock and a source of embarrassment for me. Which is why I have decided to pursue getting my driver’s license again. I do not want to spend the rest of my life being afraid to drive. As I go through this process, I am reminding myself that while driving anxiety can be a large roadblock, it is not one that I cannot get over. So, whatever challenge or stressful thing you are going through, I would like to encourage you to “do it afraid”.
