Creative Transitions: A Recap of LCCC’s Art Portfolio Review

For many art students, planning the next step in their life can feel a little intimidating, and that’s exactly why LCCC hosted its Art Portfolio Transfer Event on Feb. 18 in the Student Union.
The art students received feedback on their portfolios and connected with representatives from nearby four-year colleges, giving them a clearer picture of the opportunities in front of them. The event aimed to help students explore transfer options, get their artwork critiqued, and receive constructive criticism.
Students were encouraged to bring a digital or physical copy of their portfolios to be reviewed by representatives from various colleges. Representatives were present to answer any questions including portfolio requirements and improvements.
Jeremy Siedt, Assistant Professor of Art and Curator of the Glass Box Gallery at LCCC, emphasized the importance of providing such opportunities.
“As the lead of the Fine Arts Department, I always find it to be extremely important to give our students opportunities,” he said.
“Events like this, where students can speak with representatives about transferring and career paths, are things that aren't afforded at every school.”
For students like Mariana Velazquez Hernandez, the event was an eye-opener.
“Since I am a first-generation student, I didn’t know much about the specifics of getting a degree so it was more of an eye-opener for more opportunities,” she said.
Alex Ho, who came to LCCC to explore different art programs, found the event just as valuable.
“It helps to get a sense of what colleges offer and what college can offer the best education. Ultimately, I’m looking for educators and a good place that fits me,” he said.
Siedt and the students agreed that this event was just the start.
“It builds connections and forms professional relationships,” he said.
Siedt also recognizes the importance of getting students’ names out there.
“Getting eyes on their work is crucial because it gives students opportunities to expand,”he said.
With strong student participation and positive feedback, Siedt hopes to host this event annually, offering even more students the chance to explore their futures in the arts.
