“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”: A Long-Awaited Sequel Decades in the Making

On opening weekend, I went to see the sequel to “Beetlejuice”. Directed by Tim Burton in 1988, “Beetlejuice” instantly became a cult classic. The film centers around a couple who recently died and hires a bio-exorcist to help scare away the family that moved into their home
“Beetlejuice” has a lot of wacky practical effects, sets, and clothing. That is one reason why this film caught a lot of people’s attention. For 35 years multiple drafts for the sequel were created, but got scrapped because nothing was clicking at the time. Then they announced another film was in development, but this time with some new characters.
After watching this film, here is my spoiler-free review. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has many of the old Tim Burton charms, but it is not as good as the original. The pacing of the story felt a bit rushed and overall lacked the charm the first film possessed.
Yet there were many positives with the new film. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” provided a more in-depth look at the afterlife, while remaining a film for the entire family to enjoy. Additionally, Michael Keaton, who plays Beetlegeuse, gets more screen time than in the first film and he kills it. I have to say, Keaton and the rest of the cast make the film so much fun.
I recommend watching this film with your family. After all, it took decades to make, so now is the time to enjoy it.
