Back Home Bagels: A Local Treasure Worth Supporting
Rhiannon McKee | Writer
When running out of the house in the morning the last thing anyone wants to worry about is where to find a breakfast that is both healthy and affordable. The solution to this problem is Back Home Bagels, a restaurant conveniently located right down the street from LCCCon route 309. They offer a variety of healthy, and surprisingly affordable food, all in a welcoming atmosphere.
As the cost to eat out rises, most students are looking for options that won’t break the bank. Back Home Bagels also offers a discount of 10% off to LCCC students year-round. Josh Haines, Back Home Bagels owner and chef said it’s important to give this discount because, “students can use all the help they can get.”
They also provide free Wi-Fi and an inviting atmosphere for students looking to grab a bagel and study for a while.
Back Home Bagels offers healthy and filling food that is very reasonably priced, with lunch (including a drink) costing about $10.
This commitment to affordable, healthy meals reflects Haines' passion for serving the community, which is one of the key reasons he chose to open Back Home Bagels in the Lehigh Valley, specifically in Schnecksville. Haines included that the “diversity amongst the people” is a key factor into why he chose this location.
This appreciation for diversity is evident in Haines' customer base, as he estimates that about 20-25% of his patrons are students, many of whom come from Lehigh Carbon Community College.
Interestingly, the restaurant occupies the space where 3 Men & A Bagel once stood, a place where Haines had his very first job. This connection is what led him to choose the location for Back Home Bagels.
Originally Haines was unsure what type of restaurant to open, but Peter Reed, the head cook and manager of Back Home Bagels, suggested a bagel shop because, “it’s the best restaurant job ever.”
Back Home Bagels is located at 4041 Route 309 and is open Tuesday through Sunday, 7 a.m. through 2 p.m.
