Animals: the most natural medication

Rhiannon J. McKee | Writer

During college, it’s completely understandable for students to become stressed and anxious, I know I do. What most students don’t seem to know is that there is an easy, scientifically proven way to lower stress levels: simply walk into a room with an animal.

Pets are often taken for granted, seen as just  being there, when in fact, they have a constant positive effect on us. Being around a pet significantly lowers your blood pressure and cortisol levels. Beyond the scientific benefits, pets make you feel happy and less lonely. This can be any kind of pet; it doesn't have to be a cat or dog. A fish, a rabbit, a horse, or even a snake works, as long as you find companionship with them. The possibilities for how animals can help is almost limitless.

The next time you feel overwhelmed or stressed, spend time with a pet— whether it is yours, a family member’s, a friend’s, orby volunteering at an animal rescue.
