A New Kind of Social Media (and My Current Obsession)
Alice Frank / Writer

As the list of assignments on Canvas grows more demanding with each day, it's important to take breaks and give yourself time to do (or watch) something you enjoy.
I recently downloaded Letterboxd on my phone, an app which allows you to search for and create lists of movies you want to watch or have already watched. It also allows you to rate and write reviews after you’ve watched a movie. What I find most enjoyable, however, is reading reviews other people have written and surfing the app for lists of movies (created by app users) called: “1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die”, and “for when you want to feel something”.
Just like Instagram and TikTok, you can follow your friends, and like and comment on their reviews. I think in this age where social media is so pervasive, options like Letterboxd and Goodreads (same thing except it's for books!) provide the sought after connectability social media offers, but in a way that enriches us.
My activity on Letterboxd has translated into an expansion of taste; straying away from my typical Chick-flick (although I still love them dearly) towards Horror (please go watch The Substance) and Sci-fi (if you don’t want to watch The Substance, you should watch Interstellar!).
I used to think I wasn’t a movie person, but Letterboxd has shown me just how many incredible movies are out there and how a really good movie can truly change the trajectory of your life.
