In today’s world it’s so easy to spend your summer lost in screens- anime binging, TikTok scrolling, and nonstop texting. Before you know it, the fall semester starts in a week.
The high cost of living likely cancelled everyone’s summer trips, leaving us stuck close to home. So, how do we have a fun summer with prices rising?
Enter: the ‘80s summer.
Not to idealize the past or anything, but the ‘80s seemed like the best decade to “summer.” No smartphones, no interest in staying home, and (honorable mention) amazing music. With inflation and enormous tariffs, taking a page from the ‘80’s summer playbook would ensure a fun, low-cost summer.
Bike to your friend’s house. Splash around in the municipal pool. Practically live at the mall or amusement park. And of course, forge a hang-out spot. Summer in the ‘80s was all about being around others. Having real human connection.
Today, our summers are measured in excursions, selfies, and overall productivity. But what if we simply set an intention of having fun? Therefore, regardless of what we do, memories are sure to be made. From becoming a regular at a family-owned diner, to warm nights spent chatting under the stars, a good time doesn’t have to come at a high price.
So, before the spring semester ends, gather some friends and a portable speaker. Dust off your bike and practice your cannon-ball. You won’t even think about wasting your days- or your money. The only concern is getting back home before the street lights come on.
