Every Thursday at 2:30 p.m., students and faculty at LCCC gather in Berrier Hall’s dance room for a free 45-minute yoga session. Led by certified instructor Lacey Timony, the class welcomes all skill levels and provides a chance to relax, stretch, and focus on well-being.
“Yoga helps with stress reduction, mental clarity, and sometimes just getting up and getting away,” said Timony. “It’s an appointment you keep with yourself… for 45 minutes to an hour, nothing else is on my plate except doing this yoga and allowing yourself to be present is where the benefits come from.”
The physical benefits are also significant. Timony commented on the fact that yoga improves foot, core, and back strength along with balancing the body and one’s overall health and wellness.
“A lot of people will approach physical fitness for the first time through yoga because it is accessible for different physical abilities,” she said.
Joshua Shepherd, an LCCC student and basketball player, has been attending the class.
“Honestly, I've been wanting to try yoga for some years now, and at LCCC was my first real opportunity to try it, so I just jumped for it,” he said.
Shepherd finds the class beneficial both mentally and physically.
“Mentally I feel like it is a breath of fresh air, especially after a long day of classes,” he said. “You just come into yoga and release all of your stress. Physically, especially as a basketball player, I use my body a lot, so yoga is a good way to release tension.”
Yoga at LCCC continues to provide a space for students and faculty to relax, strengthen their bodies, and improve their well-being. Make sure to stop by with your student or faculty ID to check in and give yoga a try.
