With the arrival of intramural and recreational activities at LCCC, the Schnecksville campus has introduced a unique way to get students moving: step aerobics. Not only is step aerobics an engaging way to stay active, but it also gives students the opportunity to bond with one another in a smaller group setting and let loose. Students of all skill levels are encouraged to join as the activities can be tailored to fit a participant’s needs.
The program’s instructor, Lacey Timony, shares more details about the activity.
“Step aerobics is kind of old school, like the TV jazzercise programs a lot of our parents used to exercise to in the 80s,” she said. “Overall, it’s a really fun kind of throwback with lots of dancing and movement, and it’s great for students interested in aerobic dancing or Zumba.”
She remembers its popularity from her childhood and hopes to bring some of those exciting elements to life in LCCC’s very own dance studio. Timony structures the activity as 40-minute sessions and aims to introduce something new every week. Students spend a portion of their time moving along to a Christina Dorner video and are given the option to use additional dumbbells or risers to suit their desired workout intensity.
By connecting with the American phenomenon of colorful jazzercise aerobics from the 80s, this activity provides students with a lively environment to exercise with zero pressure. Instructors and attendees meet every Wednesday in the Dance Studio of Berrier Hall from 12 to 12:45 p.m.
