On April 14, Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit (CLIU) #21 held a journalism summit on the LCCC campus, bringing together 120 middle and high school students across the Lehigh Valley who were a part of their school’s newspaper, yearbook, and/or broadcasting staff to learn from student leaders and professionals.
The event included guest speakers that hosted sessions for students to learn more about journalism and give them a better idea of what they want to do in the future.
“Many students I talk to at this event don’t know what to do after high school,” said LCCC Professor and Media Communications Coordinator, Wendy Barron. “They can get good ideas and learn from the speakers from the event. I’m impressed by their level of engagement.”
The event also allows students to learn from their peers, whether they’re presenting or just attending.
“It has students meeting other students and other mentors outside their high schools,” said Barron.
The students were able to share their knowledge and experience with each other. Some even had portfolios to showcase to each other. Barron hosted a session about creating an e-portfolio, expressing its importance for students.
“It allows you to showcase your skill and what you’ve learned during your experience,” Barron said. “It allows future colleges, internships, and employers to see and read about the quality and variety of work in your academics and studies.”
Many of these sessions and workshops were available to students throughout the course of the event. There were also teachers and staff set up at tables from the various schools the students were from.
