A new professional sports team is headed to downtown Allentown, as the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) has announced an expansion team that will begin playing in December of this year.
The team has yet to be named. However, they will be under the ownership of Rob Brooks and Jim Brooks, the same duo who owns the Lehigh Valley Phantoms–who also play at the PPL Center.
Ownership of the league addressed Allentown’s energy and sense of community as key reasons for the decision behind the expansion.
“Lehigh Valley has long established itself as one of the premier sports markets in the country,” said Keith Tozer, Commissioner of the MASL.
Arena soccer differs from traditional outdoor soccer in multiple ways. The MASL has imported rules allowing the game to be faster-paced and to offer more scoring opportunities. Some of these rules include a smaller field and walls which allow play to be more entertaining. The league believes that a quick pace will attract new and local fans to add to the existing sports scene.
Rob Brooks, co-owner of the Phantoms, said, “We’ve always admired the skill, intensity, and passion of the game, and we’re excited to bring that same energy to the Lehigh Valley.”
Looking past entertainment, team ownership has stated that they want to focus on community involvement and youth development as a part of their long-term plan.
“Just as importantly, we are always committed to building strong connections off the field—having our team actively engage with local soccer clubs, support youth development, and create a positive impact throughout the community,” said Jim Brooks, co-owner of the Phantoms.
The new team is expected to play a 24-game schedule, including 12 home games at the PPL Center. Season tickets are already available; however, the team's players, branding, and name will be announced at a later date.
