The SEED (Success Engagement Education Determination) program, which is exclusive to Lehigh Carbon Community College, offers support to students with learning disabilities, helping them succeed academically.
Led by Michelle Mitchell since its launch in 2015, SEED provides tutoring, one-on-one and group support. The SEED lounge is located in the Rothrock Library and has quieter rooms for students who need to concentrate.
While there are other schools that have programs that help students with learning disabilities, according to Maggie Hauck, a SEED coach, at LCCC, most of the SEED students take courses for credits to earn a degree or credit bearing certificate.
According to John Vlot, Sociology Professor and SEED Resource Faculty member, SEED helps with math and writing skills, as well as time management, emotional challenges, and communication skills. The faculty tutors students so they can gain an understanding of their assignments and the material required for their classes.
Throughout the year, SEED hosts events and ends with a picnic to foster camaraderie among students and staff. In addition, first-year students are encouraged to join the Summer Bridge Program, a four-week program to help students with their orientation into college.
According to Hauck, many students have graduated from SEED and LCCC and have gone on to earn their bachelor’s degrees from four-year colleges. They’ve also had many students who have gone into the workforce with secured employment.
“It is a fantastic program, and I am proud to be a part of it,” Hauck said.
